Bioenergy is not only capable of generating electricity, but also of producing heat, and can also be used in the transportation sector as a direct alternative to fossil fuels. As such, it is expected to play an important role in the decarbonization of the energy system, complementing solar and wind power generation. The International Energy Agency predicts that modern bioenergy use will more than double globally by 2050. In Japan, the use of bioenergy has so far been focused on power generation, but it is expected to expand to heat use in industry and the consumer sector, and to fuel use in aviation, shipping, and some land-based transportation. The use of bioenergy requires sustainability, and the use of third-party certification are increasingly being implemented to ensure that they comply with sustainability criteria.
