Recommendations for Accelerating the Commercialization of Floating Offshore Wind Power

4 December 2023

in Japanese

Renewable Energy Institute released "Recommendations for Accelerating the Commercialization of Floating Offshore Wind Power" (originally published in Japanese on 14 November).

As the world shifts to renewable energy sources in order to achieve energy security and decarbonization, floating offshore wind power, a new technology, is attracting great attention. For Japan, the full-scale use of floating wind technology, which can be applied even in deep waters, is necessary to tap this technology's vast potential for electricity generation. At the same time, a swift response is urgently needed to establish an industry in Japan in the midst of global energy competition.

The recommendations include Japan's first estimates of the potential of floating offshore wind power, and addresses the need for early commencement of operations of commercial-scale projects ("fast-track") and a market environment that enhances predictability.

We hope that the report will stimulate interest and discussions on the implementation of floating offshore wind power and accelerate its deployment.
