In the discussions on the forthcoming Strategic Energy Plan and the review of Japan's greenhouse gas reduction target (NDC), two key questions need to be addressed: first, whether the policy will deliver the necessary emission reductions at the pace needed to mitigate the impacts of climate change, and second, whether the energy required to support Japanese industry and society can be secured at a low cost and in a stable manner while shifting to a decarbonized economy.
This seminar brought together energy experts such as Takeo Kikkawa, President of International University of Japan, and Yukari Takamura, Professor of Institute for Future Initiatives, the University of Tokyo, who presented their views on the future direction of Japan's energy policy. The panel was moderated by Kiyoshi Ando, Senior Staff Writer of Nikkei, and Takeo Kikkawa and Yukari Takamura were joined by Teruyuki Ohno, Executive Director of Renewable Energy Institute, to discuss the way forward for Japan in formulating the next Strategic Energy Plan and review of Japan's NDC.
The Institute's 2035 energy transition scenarios, released in June, and 2040 outlook were presented.
Program English-Japanese simultaneous interpretation provided.
