Since the 2011 earthquake, much debate on energy policy issues such as new business investment and national and local government policy administration has been engaged in at various levels, as a result of which common agreement has been reached among a wide range of people to accelerate progress towards renewable energy through actions such as a national discussion on a renewable energy future and introduction of a Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system.
What needs to be done now to expand renewable energy is to establish market-driving policies and at the same time restructure our current systems. Germany introduced a new power supply system and has succeeded in increasing the share of renewable energy from 5% to 25% in ten years. Sweden has expanded the share of renewable energy to 49% in primary energy supply and 69% in electricity, and is a leading country in the transparency of its energy market. With the FIT market now operating in Japan for eight months, the Symposium will consider the current state of the Japanese renewable energy market, what barriers exist in that market, and what breakthroughs we can expect in the future.
