At the end of 2024, the government released a new draft NDC and a Strategic Energy Plan, both of which are far from ambitious, potentially locking in Japan's climate and energy transition delays for another decade or more.
Based on our research, this seminar reported and discussed the future that is possible in 2035 and 2040 through the extensive use of renewables in the following areas.
- Can 80% or 90% of electricity be provided by renewables in 2035 and 2040 in a stable and cost-efficient manner? What are the conditions?
- Is the government's review of electricity generation costs appropriate?
- What are the requirements for accelerating offshore wind power generation in Japan?
- What are the best practices for solar deployment? What is needed for widespread deployment across the country?
- Japan’s GX strategy: Can it boost industrial decarbonization? How does it differ from EU strategies?
The seminar was followed by a light reception, providing an opportunity for companies, local authorities, researchers, NGOs, ministries and agencies to mark the start of their 2025 activities and strengthen their networks.
