Renewable Energy Institute published a report titled “Perovskite Solar Cells to Expand Deployment Sites.”
In the 7th Strategic Energy Plan, the Japanese government set a target of installing 20 GW of perovskite solar cells by 2040. This corresponds to roughly 10% of the total solar power installation target for that year (200–280 GW). Demonstration projects are underway across Japan to explore locations and methods leveraging the advantages of perovskite solar cells. Deployment sites are expanding to include the exterior walls and windows of buildings, highways and airports, wind turbine towers and farmland. Development of both film-type and glass-type cells is progressing, and the range of products is diversifying, including applications with weed-control sheets and waterproofing materials.
However, compared to conventional silicon-based products, perovskite solar cells face challenges such as higher costs and shorter durability. Even by 2040, generation costs are projected to be two to three times higher than those of silicon solar cells, while operational lifetimes are expected to be about two-thirds as long. To address these issues, efforts are being made to develop installation methods for reducing construction costs and technologies for improving durability. The government and local authorities are supporting manufacturers in capital investment and technological development, while working on roadmaps and guidelines for deployment.
This report presents demonstration projects for perovskite solar cells in various sites, outlines trends in technological development to overcome cost and durability challenges, and recommends measures for the government and local authorities to promote widespread adoption.
