The transition to renewable energy sources in the power sector is advancing. By contrast, the energy transition in the heating sector has received far less attention, even though heat accounts for half of final energy consumption, and around 80% of this heat is generated by burning fossil fuels.
Heat pumps are more energy-efficient than fossil fuel-based heating systems and can reduce fossil fuel use. Electrifying heat through heat pumps can strengthen energy security, reduce the risks associated with dependence on fossil fuels, including exposure to price spikes, and contribute to greater stability for households and the economy.
Renewable Energy Institute will continue its research on advancing the electrification of heat use and develop policy recommendations based on its findings.
