The spread of generative AI is beginning to transform the way we work and live. Alongside the expansion of the data centers (DCs) that support its use, new power demand is expected from the growing adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps, as well as the production of hydrogen and synthetic fuels. Meeting this demand is an important part of advancing GX.
Renewable energy resources are unevenly distributed across Japan. Making effective use of these resources therefore requires approaches that account for their location relative to centers of power demand. The government is advancing transmission grid development while encouraging data centers and industries to locate in regions with abundant renewable and other energy sources.
However, influencing where power demand is located cannot, on its own, resolve all power supply challenges. Action is needed on both the supply and demand sides, combining renewable energy development, transmission grid expansion, and more effective ways of using power. In particular, combining steady progress on transmission grid development, which requires long lead times and substantial investment, with measures that can be implemented more quickly is key to building the power supply infrastructure needed to support GX.
Drawing on recent developments, including the expansion of data centers, this symposium will discuss the challenges and practical measures needed to maximize the use of renewable energy. We welcome participants from a wide range of sectors and organizations.
We hope you join us.
