Unlike many countries where building decarbonization is driven primarily by government regulation, the UK's progress has been shaped by a strong grassroots movement led by architects, engineers, developers, and other industry professionals. Practical experience gained through pioneering projects has helped establish industry benchmarks and, in turn, has influenced public policy and regulatory frameworks.
In this webinar, Younha Rhee of Atelier Ten will share how this practice-led approach has accelerated the adoption of whole-life carbon assessment, retrofit strategies, and circular economy principles in London, drawing on lessons from some of the UK's leading low-carbon developments.

Director, Sustainability and Environmental Design, London, Atelier Ten - Younha Rhee is Technical Director and leads the Environmental Design Team at Atelier Ten's London office. With over 17 years of experience, her notable projects include Chelsea Barracks (LEED ND Platinum), Space House (BREEAM Outstanding), and British Land’s Sustainability Brief. Recently, she has focused on London retrofit and global net-zero carbon projects, emphasising circular economy principles and integrating benchmarking systems into design processes to deliver complex, sustainable solutions for net zero carbon projects worldwide.

Japan is set to introduce a framework requiring the calculation and disclosure of whole-life greenhouse gas emissions for buildings with a gross floor area exceeding 5,000㎡, beginning in FY2028. While the details of the framework continue to be developed, stakeholders across the building sector, including project owners, architects, contractors, and building material manufacturers must begin preparing for its practical implementation. Across Europe, Building LCA has already become embedded in planning approvals, design development, material procurement, and investment decision-making. In North America, disclosure requirements and public procurement policies are accelerating demand for carbon data, reshaping both construction markets and supply chains. This webinar series explores what these international experiences can teach us about Japan's emerging framework. Looking beyond compliance, we will examine how Building LCA is influencing design choices, transforming material markets, and changing the way value and risk are assessed across the real estate and construction sectors.
