Japan is set to introduce a framework requiring the calculation and disclosure of whole-life greenhouse gas emissions for buildings with a gross floor area exceeding 5,000㎡, beginning in FY2028. While the details of the framework continue to be developed, stakeholders across the building sector, including project owners, architects, contractors, and building material manufacturers must begin preparing for its practical implementation.
Across Europe, Building LCA has already become embedded in planning approvals, design development, material procurement, and investment decision-making. In North America, disclosure requirements and public procurement policies are accelerating demand for carbon data, reshaping both construction markets and supply chains.
This webinar series explores what these international experiences can teach us about Japan's emerging framework. Looking beyond compliance, we will examine how Building LCA is influencing design choices, transforming material markets, and changing the way value and risk are assessed across the real estate and construction sectors (series featuring France, the UK, and the US, tbc).

In France, the environmental regulation RE2020, which has been implemented progressively since 2022, introduced life-cycle carbon assessment covering the entire building lifecycle, from construction through end-of-life, in addition to operational energy performance requirements. The impact has extended far beyond reporting. Carbon considerations are now shaping design strategies, material specifications, procurement decisions, and investment priorities throughout the building sector. This session examined how RE2020 has influenced architectural practice and market behaviour since its introduction. Drawing on first-hand experience, the discussion explored how designers, developers, and product manufacturers have responded to the new requirements, and what lessons their experience may offer for Japan as it prepares for the introduction of its own Building LCA framework in 2028. |

Founder, Lab V - Laélia Vaulot is the founder of Lab V, an environmental strategy consultancy specializing in Building Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), embodied carbon, and the circular economy.
Based between Paris and Tokyo, she advises investors, developers, and design teams on low-carbon building strategies and the transition toward a decarbonized built environment. Her work combines hands-on experience with France's RE2020 framework and a deep understanding of how carbon regulation is reshaping building practice internationally.
