Lutz Mez got a diploma in political science, a PhD in social sciences and a state doctorate in political science from Freie Universität Berlin. In April 1986 he acted as co-founder of the Environmental Policy Research Centre and served as its Executive Director until 2010. Since November 2009 he is Coordinator of the Berlin Centre for Caspian Region Studies. His major research area is comparative environmental and energy policy with particular reference to nuclear and electricity policy. He has been editor of a number of books and author of an extensive collection of journal articles and chapters in international edited books on these topics.
He is also founding member of the REFORM group (Restructuring Energy Systems For Optimal Re-source Management), which is an informal group of scientists and consultants from Western and Eastern Europe, the United States, Brazil, India and Japan analysing the political transformation of energy systems, energy planning and energy policy. The group has published many books on the transformation of electricity and gas markets and their regulation. Since 1995 the REFORM group organises annual conferences at Schloss Leopoldskron, Austria.
