After studying Political Sciences in Erlangen and Barcelona, Stefan Gsänger started his career working for Hermann Scheer, Member of the German Parliament, President of Eurosolar and during that period winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize.
When joining the German Wind Energy Association BWE, he was instrumental in the foundation of the World Wind Energy Association in 2001. Subsequently, he managed the association since that time. Under his direction, WWEA has become the voice of the wind sector worldwide, with 600 members (representing indirectly 50,000 members) in more than 100 countries. WWEA also attained Special Consultative Status at the UN.
He is one of the initiators of the International Renewable Energy Alliance and has consulted for governments as well as international organisations (including IRENA, REN21, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, IEA, ILO, World Bank). He is a member of the International Steering Committee of REN21, a co-initiator and Executive Committee Member of the Global Go100%Renewables campaign and a member of the Innovation Network of the Japan Renewable Energy Foundation.
Mr Gsänger has co-organised 14 World Wind Energy Conferences on all continents, and has been an invited speaker at conferences in 40 countries on all continents. He published numerous articles, is editor of the yearbook Wind Energy International, the WWEA Quarterly Bulletin as well as of the Small Wind World Report and member of the editorial board of InWind Chronicle.
In 2011, Mr Gsänger received the International Community Power Award of the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association.
